Genealogy

Along with my cousin Al Manhart, who got me started in genealogy back in 1989, we have been able to trace the Manhart family and related branches back to the mid 1700's. Our branch of Manhart's arrived first through Canada from Europe starting around 1850 and settled in Buffalo, NY. They begain their journey near Strasbourg, France which neighbors the German border. Over the years, as the border shifted due to wars and disputes, Strasbourg has been both in Germany and France. This was all very evident as during some periods birth records were in French and other periods they were in German.

Jacob Manhart

Jacob ManhartJacob Manhart was the first direct desendant to arrive in the United States back in the 1850's and he began his life working on various pursuits. He owned a saloon and boarding house and even held the title as President of the Buffalo Co-operative Brewing company for a number of years and was a prominent person in the community. There is even a street that was named after him - Manhart street - for all the good that he did for the community. Jacob married Magdelena Pitz around 1860 and had several childern. When Jacob's first wife of 20 years past away in 1880 he married Eliza Riller and had several more childern. Upon his death, his second wife Eliza, wanting to be with her childern in California, sold all of his holdings in Buffalo and moved to Altadena California where she cared for her kids and didn't need to work until she died 50 years later.
